Da Vinci's Notebook

Da Vinci's Notebook (or simply DVN) was a comedic a cappella singing group. Former Artists-in-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, they performed specials on Comedy Central and PBS, and spent time as the "house band" on Washington radio's WBIG-FM. They were also regular guests on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show.

HISTORY
The group was formed in 1993, by Bernie Muller-Thym, Greg "Storm" DiCostanzo, Paul Sabourin and Richard Hsu. Muller-Thym, DiCostanzo, and Sabourin met via a classified ad. Hsu, a friend of DiConstanza from the University of Maryland, joined them in the summer of 1993. Bass singer Jay Jones sang with them from 1993 to 1994.

Da Vinci's Notebook made their debut at the 1994 Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes, where they came in third place.[1] In 1996, they came back and won the 1996 Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes.

They continued to tour, locally and nationally, for the next ten years. Highlights included some of the most prestigious folk venues and festivals on the East Coast, such as the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.

In addition to their albums, DVN also recorded a track called "The Ballad of The Sneak" for the Homestar Runner cartoon website. This song was credited to the entire group, though it was only written and performed by Paul and Storm.

In 2004, the band stopped touring and regular performances. Two of the members, Paul and Storm, then hit the road as a musical duo dubbed Paul and Storm. DVN will still perform together on occasion for corporate shows.

In 2007, interest in the band spiked as they began to get played on the syndicated "Bob and Tom" radio show. Their signature songs include "Ally McBeal", "Enormous Penis", "Internet Porn", and "Title of the Song".

In 2013, DVN's "Another Irish Drinking Song" was featured in the film Despicable Me 2, with new lyrics in the language of the Minions.

CHANTICLEER

CHANTICLEER

Based in San Francisco, California, Chanticleer is a full-time male classical vocal ensemble in the United States. Over the last three decades, it has developed a major reputation for its interpretations of Renaissance music, but it also performs a wide repertoire of jazz, gospel, and other venturesome new music and is widely known as an "Orchestra of Voices". It was named for the "clear singing rooster" in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.

HISTORY OF CHANTICLEER

CHANTICLEER was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, who sang with the group until 1989, and served as Artistic Director until his death from AIDS in 1997.[1] As a graduate student of musicology, Botto found that much of the medieval and Renaissance music he was studying was not being performed, and, because of this, he formed the group to perform this music with an all-male ensemble, as it was traditionally sung during the Renaissance.

Originally, the group contained ten singers, but its size has varied from eight to twelve. Currently, Chanticleer comprises twelve men, including two basses, one baritone, three tenors, and six countertenors (three altos and three sopranos).

The original members included Jim Armington (tenor), Ted Bakkila (baritone), Rob Bell (countertenor), Louis Botto (who sang alto as well as tenor), Sanford Dole (tenor), Kevin Freeman (bass), Tim Gibler (bass), Tom Hart (baritone), Jonathan Klein (baritone), Neal Rogers (tenor), Randall Wong (countertenor), and Doug Wyatt (bass). However, only ten of the singers were available to go on tour.

When the ensemble first became full-time in 1991, its members included Eric Alatorre (bass, and currently the longest standing member), Frank Albinder (baritone), Kevin Baum (tenor), Mark Daniel (tenor), Kenneth Fitch (countertenor), Jonathan Goodman (tenor), Tim Gibler (bass, and last of the original twelve), Joseph Jennings (countertenor and Music Director), Chad Runyon (baritone), Foster Sommerlad (countertenor), Matthew Thompson (tenor), and Philip Wilder (countertenor).

In May 2007, Chanticleer released "And On Earth, Peace: A Chanticleer Mass" (Warner Classics) a new mass written by five contemporary composers. Israeli-born composer Shulamit Ran wrote the Credo to the Hebrew text "Ani Ma'amin"; US composer Douglas Cuomo contributed the Kyrie; Turkish-American composer Kamran Ince composed the Gloria section to a sufi text; English composer Ivan Moody composed the Sanctus; and Irish composer Michael McGlynn (director of Anúna) composed the Agnus Dei. The Mass was premiered in performance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and was followed by six performances throughout the San Francisco Bay area.

On 16 October 2007, Chanticleer released "Let it Snow," the group's 29th recording. A portion of the album is accompanied by orchestra and/or big band; as such, the album brings a new sound to Chanticleer's almost exclusively a cappella repertoire.

BOUNDING MAIN

BOUNDING MAIN is an American a cappella quintet focusing on traditional sea shanties and maritime music.

Formed in 2003, Bounding Main performs maritime music, presenting an "Elizabethan Sea Dog" look in their costumes and gear. They perform traditional sea shanties and nautical ballads from as far back as 400 years ago, as well as new maritime music, some composed within the group. Bounding Main attempts to introduce historical music and structure in a way that appeals to listeners who might otherwise consider it "old-fashioned" through the use of harmony-focused arrangements agreeable to the modern ear and attention span.[citation needed] The group has won awards for their performances at renaissance festivals, and they have taken several international tours, bringing their music to popular shanty festivals in locations such as Germany, Netherlands, Poland, France, and Canada.Their fan club is known as the Bounding Mainiacs.

HISTORY
BOUNDING MAIN Bounding Main was formed when Dean Calin contacted five other veteran environmental theater performers, Christie Dalby, Gina Dalby, Maggie Hannington, Jon Krivitzky, and David Yondorf, inquiring if they wanted to join together to sing maritime music. The group met for rehearsal for the first time on January 19, 2003.[4] They performed as a sextet until March 2010, when Maggie Hannington retired from the group to make time for her family, especially her young child, but the group continues to perform as a quintet.

As all six performers were vocalists, and traditional sea shanties were often performed a cappella, the group decided to perform their music a cappella with minimal percussion for some songs. The group originally collaborated with instrumentalists on their first CD, Maiden Voyage, but since then have elected to mainly produce a capella tracks.

Bounding Main has performed at maritime museums, maritime music festivals, including the Chicago Maritime Festival, tall ship festivals, harbor festivals, arts festivals, pirate festivals, renaissance faires, wooden boat shows, corporate events and private parties. Additionally, the group has performed at several international music festivals.

Bounding Main has produced five CDs: Maiden Voyage, Lost at Sea, Going Overboard, Operation Share the Shanties, and Kraken Up. Going Overboard was favorably reviewed in Dirty Linen magazine in 2010.

Bounding Main's first performance in Europe was at the Festival Maritim in Bremen-Vegesack, Germany in August 2008. Festival Maritim, which started in 1999, attracts high quality, professional bands and choirs from all over Europe and the world.

While in Germany for this festival, the group also performed at other locations in The Netherlands and Germany, most notably a charity performance to entertain US troops recovering at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany.

October 2008
Six weeks later, the group embarked upon their second overseas trip, traveling to The Netherlands for the Liereliet Festival.Based in Workum, this festival has been entertaining with authentic work songs and sailing activities since 1988.

February 2010
Bounding Main performed at the 29th International Sailors' Song Festival, "Shanties 2010" in Kraków, Poland.[12] This popular shanty festival has become one of the most important in the world since its founding in 1981.

August 2011
In August 2011 Bounding Main again traveled to The Netherlands and performed at the 10th anniversary of the "Bie Daip International Shanty Festival" in Appingedam, Netherlands.

August 2012

BOYZ II MEN

Boyz II Men is an American R&B vocal group, best known for emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies. Formerly a quartet featuring Michael McCary, they are currently a trio composed of baritone Nathan Morris alongside tenors Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman. During the 1990s, Boyz II Men found fame on Motown Records as a quartet. McCary left the group in 2003 due to health issues.[1]

During the 1990s, Boyz II Men gained international success. This began with the release of the number one single "End of the Road" in 1992, which reached the top of charts worldwide.[2] "End of the Road" would set a new record for longevity, staying at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks, breaking the decades-old record held by Elvis Presley. Boyz II Men proceeded to break this record with the subsequent releases of "I'll Make Love to You" and "One Sweet Day" (with Mariah Carey), which, at fourteen and sixteen weeks respectively, each set new records for the total number of weeks at number one. "I'll Make Love to You" also topped the charts in Australia (for four weeks) and garnered international success. As of 2015, "One Sweet Day" still holds the all-time record with sixteen weeks at the top of the Hot 100.

Consequently, Boyz II Men are top ranking members with regard to time spent at number one in Billboard history, ranking in the fourth spot with 50 weeks (as of 2014).[3] Furthermore, when "On Bended Knee" took the number 1 spot away from "I'll Make Love to You", Boyz II Men became only the third artists ever (after The Beatles and Presley) to replace themselves at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Boyz II Men are among a select group of artists that have held at the number-one spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively, placing them just fourth on that list behind Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey. These achievements were enough to earn Boyz II Men recognition as Billboard magazine's fourth most successful musical group of the 1990s.[5]

Boyz II Men continue to perform worldwide, as a trio. Their most recent studio album, Collide, was released in 2014.
